Picking up where we left off in the last blog: This Cleveland-area kitchen remodel pays homage to the home’s historic charm while creating a new open-concept space with modern-day functionality. We created harmony in the disjointed kitchen-living space by removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room, adding an island and reworking the kitchen layout.
The Kitchen Before and After
The New Kitchen Features
To achieve a clean kitchen aesthetic that flows seamlessly with the style of the home and its original millwork, we used stock cabinets (Waypoint 660d in linen) along with custom appointments. Removing the soffits and extending the cabinets up to the ceiling creates more usable space and draws the eye upward, making the room look larger.
The new kitchen not only looks bigger, but the new layout creates more usable space for added features including tall pantry cabinets with rollouts for easy-access storage, a double oven and a convenient microwave drawer. By design, the home’s original built-in display cabinet and laundry chute remain in place.
Before & After
New Kitchen Surfaces
For a clean, classic look in the kitchen, the homeowners chose quartz countertops in Carrara Marmi that offer a bright surface with just a hint of blue. For the backsplash, we used ceramic tile: International, Delray, in White Caps Crackle, 3×6. For the inlay above the range, Pratt + Larson tile in Mono 6×6 Filigree, Color P145 provides texture and color.
Before & After
For plumbing fixtures, we reused the homeowners’ existing Moen faucet and installed a new Kohler Porcelain Riverby Sink.
Creating the Kitchen Island
The island was crafted using stock cabinets and finished with custom trim work to make it look like a piece of furniture, with loads of extra storage capacity. Plus, it offers the added seating the homeowners desired and lots of surface area for entertaining. We positioned it at precisely the right angle to make the island part of the new kitchen but within direct view of the TV in the family room.
The Details That Tie It All Together
To provide ample lighting for the all-new kitchen, we upgraded the electrical system and added undercabinet lights, recessed can lighting and new fixtures throughout. Finally, we toothed in new hardwood planks to match the home’s original flooring and then refinished all the hardwood to create a harmonious flow.
