Creating a contemporary European kitchen: Get the look
In this final blog in this series, I’ll detail the homeowners’ product and finish selections, complete with some beautiful final project photos!
The homeowners wanted a clean, contemporary vibe in their new kitchen. We achieved that look with custom frameless cabinets in high-gloss white laminate with sleek brushed aluminum L-shaped pulls.
To balance the white, a medium-hue grey granite, Steel Grey from Rock Solid Stoneworks, was selected. The grey tones and subtle movement was perfect to add warmth against the coolness of the white.
The backsplash was an area of great discussion. The homeowners definitely did not want any mosaic, stone or glass. Together, we decided on subway tile, which seemed a bit traditional—until we found a 4” x 16” ceramic tile in a soft shade of taupe (Crossville Expressions in Haze). We installed the tile square-set up to the ceiling, creating a modern feel.
For the floor, we selected a 12” x 24” porcelain tile that echoed the look of the granite in color and pattern (Crossville Sands in Dark Sand). These tiles were installed one-third offset at an angle to the hardwood flooring. A polished steel light fixture adds sophistication and whimsy.
With the renovation of the kitchen, the entire townhome living space finally feels cohesive. The home now has a seamless design that reflects the inherent European aesthetic of the owners: Clean, modern, functional, and most importantly, elegant!
