From an outdated, cramped bathroom with an awkward layout to a spacious, spa-like primary bathroom with striking visual contrast—this custom bathroom remodel is a total transformation.
Shower? Tub? Both!
While we know that having at least one bathtub is recommended by real estate professionals for increasing a home’s value, a freestanding tub in the primary bathroom is also on trend. A recent study by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) found that over half of home buyers prefer a master bath with a bathtub and shower instead of just a shower stall.
This Northeast Ohio primary bathroom remodel follows that style trend, not because the homeowners were overly concerned about resale. Instead, they made choices based on how they live, working with our team at Dover Home Remodelers to create a beautiful bathroom where they can relax and unwind. The results are stunning. This blog reviews the remodel with before and after photos and details about materials and fixtures.
Primary Bathroom: Before & After
The outdated, builder-grade primary bathroom needed a major refresh: While the bathroom had ample square footage and lofty ceilings, the dark colors, huge corner Jacuzzi tub and split vanities cramped the space. The vision for the new bathroom was a more efficient layout with cabinetry, surfaces and fixtures in lighter colors for an open, airy vibe.
Getting Started: Out with the Old
In addition to the room’s choppy layout, the homeowners were excited to say goodbye to their primary bathroom’s outdated materials and fixtures. So, with the new design approved, we started by removing both vanities and deleting the oversized garden tub and stall shower. Then, we removed the wall that separated the shower from the vanity area to create one large, open space. All flooring and fixtures were also part of the demo. Only the private toilet room remained in its same location.
The New Primary Bathroom
Without the wall, shower stall and garden tub, we had a wide-open space to re-orient the room. On the homeowners’ wish list was one shared vanity with double sinks, a spacious walk-in shower, a soaking tub and a linen closet for storage.
The Bathroom Vanity
The homeowners leaned into a light, bright space but with visual contrast, using black finishes and fixtures. The bathroom vanity features cabinets (Waypoint 540F) in Harbor and countertops in Corian Quartz, Ashen Grey, with a basic eased edge. All cabinets and drawers are customized with pullouts, built-in plugs and other space-saving upgrades. The hardware is Sullivan #752-96MB in Matte Black finish.
The homeowners selected Kohler Caxton Rectangular Undermount Sinks in white to create a clean aesthetic offset by Moen faucets (Genta T6708BL), also in Matte Black. On the floor, 12” x 24” Vallelunga Carrara tile (honed finish) creates harmony. Simple, black-framed mirrors and light sconces complete the vanity.
The Bathroom Shower & Tub
For a crisp, seamless look, the homeowners chose the same classic porcelain tile used on the bathroom floors for the shower walls: Vallelunga Carrara in a honed finish (VALCARR1224H). The 12” X 24” tiles are installed in a half-offset pattern for visual pop with coordinating bullnose 3” x 24” trim set with TEC grout (Silverado 949). On the shower floor and in the back of the niches, we used Tileanatolia La Marca Carrara Gioia 2” hexagon mosaic in a honed finish (ANALMCGHEX2H). The same Corian Quartz from the countertops is used on the shower bench top, curb, niche ledge and knee wall caps for consistency.
The shower fixtures follow the same design scheme, featuring a Delta Awaken G90 Multi-Function Shower Head in Matte Black. We fabricated a custom glass enclosure (76”x 80”) to complete the shower and used Moen Genta Shower Trim in Matte Black for a sharp finish.
For the primary bathroom soaking tub, the Fleurco Alto Petite Tub, at 58” X 31-1/2” 23”, perfectly fits the space. The tub features a deck-mounted Moen Genta Roman Tub Faucet in Matte Black.
This beautiful primary bathroom remodel checks all the boxes with its clean lines, light, bright color palette and classic fixtures.
