Creating an updated family-friendly, open-concept kitchen
Picking up where we left off before Thanksgiving…
These homeowners were very involved in the design process, collaborating on every element of their new kitchen. The redesigned island was among their top priorities: It completely changed the flow of the kitchen to better accommodate entertaining, as well as their everyday meals and hanging at home with their children.

Every square inch of this kitchen was given thought and attention, from the unique natural stone backsplash to the jewelry of the kitchen: the stylish brushed gold pulls and knobs (Sutton Pulls and Elara Knobs: Hardware Resources, Jeffrey Alexander Collection) and the contemporary Moen Align brushed gold pull-out faucet. To keep the space simple yet elegant, they chose sleek Corian Quartz countertops in London Sky for the subtle look of marble, but without the upkeep.
For the backsplash, they wanted a unique pattern, but with a subtle, understated look. The picket style was the perfect choice! The tile was sourced from a local manufacturer: Altura Stone & Tile, Alba Vera Honed Picket Mosaic. Because it is a natural stone material, we put a specialty sealant on it for less maintenance and easy cleaning.
We used energy-efficient LED fixtures throughout: Recessed can lighting, undercabinet lighting, and lighting inside the glass display cabinets accent and illuminate their finest glassware and heirlooms and provide warm ambience in the newly updated kitchen. Every light is on a dimmer switch which gives them greater flexibility.
The pantry cabinets provide three adjustable shelves and four rollout shelves for endless organization options—a must for this busy young family. In addition to the pantry storage, we maximized the other kitchen cabinets with lots of extras: One of the practical accessories was this pull out to store cookie trays and cutting boards.
Not only did the updated style and soothing palette make a dramatic impact in this new space—the redesigned large rectangular island completely changed the flow of the kitchen to better accommodate entertaining as well as their everyday meals and hanging at home with their children.
Even the back side of the island behind the seating was an opportunity for added storage.
Together we imagined and created a warm and transitional kitchen. Every detail of this kitchen was designed with thoughts of organization and functionality as well as a clean and contemporary aesthetic.
