This stunning renovation earned our team at Dover the 2020 NARI Contractor of the Year (CotY) Award: Honorable Mention, Residential Interior: Under $100,000. This week, Dover designer and guest blogger Amy Tilow walks you through the final phase of this award-winning home remodeling project featuring a fabulous open-concept family kitchen and living space.

Welcome to a brighter, bolder family kitchen
Without adding square footage to the home, the redesigned kitchen space now lives much bigger with its airy, open-concept layout and smart functionality. This design solution saved time and money, while still giving this family everything they wanted in their new kitchen.
The homeowners are drawn to sleek, sophisticated mid-century modern style—so we used that as our guide for selections. They chose the clean lines of Reliable Cabinetry’s slab door style, custom-painted in Sherwin-Williams Olympus White (SW6523), paired with Reliable Cabinetry pulls in a sleek T-bar style, satin nickel finish. For the surfaces, they selected Rocksolid Stoneworks in Zodiac Cloud White Quartz.
The new space features professional-grade appliances with lots of convenient storage.
The central island has seating for four, ample surface workspace, and even more storage for the chef in the family, with drawers below the cooktop and a spice pull-out cabinet.
We made better use of previously cramped corner space, creating a large pantry cabinet with roll-out trays and a reduced depth cabinet on the side for hidden storage—complete with dry erase material inside the doors for family “to-do” lists or kid’s artwork.
To balance and tie together the neutral elements in the kitchen, we created a focal point with the backsplash in Oceanside, Devotion Lotus Blend/Serenity Glass Mosaic. (Kitchen faucet: Moen Sto, Single Handle High-Arc, Pulldown)
Rather than a cabinet above the sink, custom wood shelves were stained to match the engineered hardwood flooring (Armstrong, Bruce Engineered Maple, Cappuccino) and installed between wall cabinets. This allows for the feature backsplash to go to the ceiling and create a space to display items.
Rounding out this customized space are LED undercabinet lights, Decora switches and a fabulous dining room chandelier: Robert Abbey/Jonathon Adler Meurice Rectangular.
Color plays a big role in every living space—so I’m happy to share these selections: Kitchen/living room/ dining rooms walls: Benjamin Moore BM-HC 172 Revere Pewter; dining room feature wall: Sherwin-Williams SW 6481 Green Bay; and foyer walls: Sherwin-Williams SW 0019 Festoon Aqua.
