A high-style master bathroom transformation
Picking up where we left off last week…
As we started this master bathroom project, there were a few challenges with the existing space, mainly the roof line being lower over the tub area (which would become the new shower). In order to gain adequate head room, the shower had to be built as a step-down. The existing tub area had two large windows that the homeowner wasn’t sure she wanted to part with, as she has a beautiful view of her small lake. Plus she did not want to lose the natural light. She had considered glass block; but in the end, decided on awning windows that allow both light and ventilation. Here’s the before and after effect:

For the renovation, we took the room down to the studs and began the rebuild.

The homeowner knew she wanted marble surfaces—so that’s where the selections process started. We choose dark grey 12” x 12” (Bardiglio Scuro Honed Marble) for the main floor, installed on the diagonal and added a Schluter/Ditraheat mat for heating element. For grout, we selected TEC 949 Silverado for its grey tone and stain-resistant qualities.
The same 12” x 12” in white marble (Bianco Carrera Honed Marble) was used in the shower, straight set on the walls and diagonal on the ceiling. The shower floor is a marble penny tile and a decorative tile (Italian Carreta Mosaic Rhomboid with Nero Dot) was used as a vertical stripe on the long wall. The accent tile is edged in Schluter metal trim to offset the pattern.
