Go on Houzz or tune into HGTV and it’s right there: Beautiful home renovation inspiration featuring tile. When I meet with customers to talk about design and product selections for their home remodeling projects, tile is usually part of that discussion. From backsplashes to shower enclosures to flooring applications, tile is a versatile product choice with near universal appeal.
Tile is an attractive choice for so many reasons: Porcelain tile products are big on functionality and, when installed properly, have the highest overall durability for both residential and commercial applications. Being almost impervious to moisture porcelain tile can be a perfect application for kitchens, bathrooms, shower enclosures and some exterior applications. For depth and dimension, classic natural stone tile like travertine, slate or marble can be used to elevate a design look for a multitude of applications.
If you’re looking to incorporate the latest on-trend tile applications in your next home remodeling project, here are a few ideas:
1. Pattern. Old-school and vintage-look tiles are in, particularly in black and white. We’re seeing patterned tile used in small spaces for big impact—bathrooms, mudrooms and laundry rooms.
2. Shape. Using uniquely-shaped tile is one way to create a design accent that feels fresh: Hexagonal, small squares and rectangular subway tiles are in. Installed in herringbone or chevron patterns, in lattice-weave or mosaic, or simply offset—these are trends that create a distinctive look that can either be installed in a clean, monochromatic scheme or using color for more impact.
3. Texture. On trend now are tiles with three-dimensional or etched surfaces, which makes them textured and touchable. Porcelain tiles that emulate the handcrafted, old-world feel; or a mix of matte, glossy or metallic tile finishes incorporate texture into room. These are used a lot in backsplash installations or as an accent above a stove or in a shower.
4. Size. Big is in right now: We’re seeing a lot of oversized tile used on both floors and walls—12”x24”, 18”x18” and 18”x36” tiles make a dramatic design statement—in both horizontal and vertical installations—and they require less grout, which is an attractive benefit. Even the traditional subway tile has followed the big trend and is often used in larger sizes.
